History of UPals Partners
The rationale for beginning the UPals program was based upon several recent studies conducted by Stamford, CT area civic organizations that projected a serious challenge in meeting workforce needs by the year 2010 and beyond. The college educated baby boom generation will be reaching retirement age and at that time a huge gap will be left in skilled, educated workers for the region. The time was right to reach out to immigrant families and under served families from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.
Donors, professors, middle school administrators, parents and students came together to provide a simulated college experience. Students completed applications, participated in workshops with their parents and underwent group interviews. Those who made the cut were chosen on the basis of commitment, enthusiasm and parent participation. Academic promise, as opposed to academic excellence, was a key factor.
In subsequent years, each group of students return for additional enrichment sessions. Summer sessions included academics, SAT preparation, course selection counseling, and coaching on the college application/essay writing.
Every year the program is modified to ensure that its innovative nature is appealing to each new student cohort.
