Benefits of UPals Program
Benefits to the Student
UPals was conceived as a stepping stone to higher education. Implementing UPals in middle school reaches students at an age when "opinions" about college and higher education are not already formed. Friends and study standards are still malleable and parents have a longer run way to effect change. Other benefits of UPals for the student are:
- Students feel comfortable in a college environment — larger desks, bigger buildings, and non-standard class topics.
- Students learn the process for applying to college. They are no longer "mystified" by how college works.
- Students get counseling on appropriate high school courses and college "readiness" programs.
- Students meet other like-minded students to create college bound social groups — discuss common goals, challenges, pathways and opportunities.
- Students choose electives vastly different from the standard middle school / high school offerings. Reading, writing and math are considered core courses.
- Students learn about career alternatives and business opportunities. In the later years, students are given preference for internships and work study programs in the community.
- Students are provided leadership roles to work through personal development styles.
